A troop of peasant militia along with an outrider and a party of brave adventurers went out with their minds set to burn the flesh tree. Everyone had bundles of wood withe them.
Nothing was encountered on the way to the tree, but when the group reached the tree it was like a heavy weight was placed on everyone’s shoulders. There was also a lot of new fruit on it.
The soldiers were ordered to place their bundles of wood at the tree for burning, but some of the more rash soldiers decided to start chopping the tree down before lighting the fire. When the first axe hit the tree a shrill shriek tore the air. It seemed to come from all around the glade. The peasants were terrified and ran off in every direction.
The master of arms sent the outrider to gather them up and take them back to town.
With all the militia gone, the group continued to prepare the fire around the tree. With the shriek now just a low moaning coming from everywhere the fire was lit. The only bottle of lamp oil was hastily splashed on the pyre. As the flames begun to lick the trees spongy bark half a dozen skeletons rushed out of the surrounding trees towards the brave heroes.
The heroes stood their ground and dealt with the skeleton, taking minor wounds.
James new battle hammer proved very effective bashing in skeleton skulls. After the battle was done the adventurers hang around to watch the fire, but since the tree was so green and it had been raining it soon went out. The party went back to the village to start afresh the very next day.
The next day, with even more soldiers and all the wood that could be carried along with a lot of lamp oil, the brave adventurers went forth again to battle the stationary tree.
Upon reaching the glade for a second time great scorch marks were seen on the tree and the spongy bark had somewhat diminished around where the fire had been set.
All the kindling was set around the tree with great care, not to disturb it. And the lamp oil was splashed generously on the tree this time. After this the whole troop of people went about a hundred yards away too see what happened.
Two flaming arrows shot forth and hit the kindling and the great fire was rushing up the trees bark.
Not long had the fire been consuming the tree when the fruits started to shrivel and then grow. Bones were seen sticking out of the fruits and before long a dozen skeletons hit the ground around the tree, At first they were milling about, but then it was as a higher mind started to control them and steered them toward the waiting troops.
A spear wall was hastily formed with the adventurers on key positions, a few arrows shooting out here and there taking down a few of the incoming skeletons. Then with a great soundless cry the skeletons charged straight into the spear wall. A few pierced straight through continued to pull their way along the spear shafts and some soldiers were down. After a brief melee most of the skeletons were down, but the Master of Arms, seeing so many of his troops downed, went into a berserker rage and took out several skeletons in a furious storm of blades.
With the skeletons downed and the soldiers that could be saved sent to town the rest of the troop and adventurers watched the hungry flames consume the tree. And after a few hours all went home to the settlement except for a few soldiers who guarded the site.
It was thought that the barrel of fruits that was taken to the giants were the cause of the skeleton horde there. And subsequently the slaughter of three brave men, one of them the brave Glenn. And not a work of the demon samurais.
With a few days rest the adventurers were as new, and with the village now completed inside the great stronghold the people were in high spirits and were preparing for the oncoming festival to mark the birth of a great town.
The adventurers went forth again towards the tree to see what had happened, but nothing had changed from when they were there previously. So they decided to check on the cave and if that was clear see if they could find the lizarmens trail again.
Upon finding the cave a great pack of more than two dozen kobolds were found walking back and forth to the cave entrance and the woods. Seeing this as a minor threat the great marksman Thorgrim set about with his crossbow scoring many hits.
The rest of the kobolds scrambled towards the cave with the adventurers not so close on their heels.
Entering the cave, the party found tracks going everywhere. Going about the cave a few packs of kobolds were rooted out. But it was easy work. Reaching the big room with the podium and burnt out bonfires a strange yellow mist was found in a side chamber and blue mold going into a second one. Fire was tested on both, but only the mold seemed susceptible to it. Going back towards the cave entrance a couple of giant bees were seen behind the blue mold.
It was decided that the party would eat lunch in the small chamber with a bed, close to the well with a stone on it. And so it was.
